Large holes on the sides of the molds increase air circulation in the kiln, ensuring heat is evenly distributed throughout the mold and glass. Channels along the base of the form also assist in the circulation of air and heat distribution. Brad Walker, author of Contemporary Warm Glass and founder of www.warmglass.com, provides a detailed article using Slumpy's SM-500 Veggie Tray Mold titled "Time, Temperature, and Span: secrets of successful slumping."
One of the most difficult things for the beginning fuser to learn is the correct temperature for slumping. Slump too fast or too high and a project is liable to shift or distort. Slump too slow or too low and your patience wears thin before the piece is done. Finding that middle ground - the exact temperature and time that Goldilocks would describe as "Just right!" - is a big part of what separates the novice from the expert."
